How We Determined The Safest Hampton Hoods In 2020

You can ask people which neighborhoods are the safest, or you can just look at the unbiased raw data. So, instead of relying on speculation and opinion, we analyzed the hard numbers from the FBIs most recent crime report (published in September of 2019) for every neighborhood in Hampton.

To be more specific, we analyzed the FBIs Uniform Crime Report. We then ran an analysis to calculate each neighborhoods property and violent crimes based on the demographics of the area and reported crime. We used two key criteria:

  • Total Crimes Per Capita
  • Violent Crimes Per Capita
  • Property Crimes Per Capita

We then ranked each neighborhood with scores from 1 to 10 in each category, where 1 was the safest.

Next, we averaged the rankings for each neighborhood to create a safe neighborhood index.

And finally, we crowned the neighborhood with the lowest safest neighborhood index the ‘Safest City Neighborhood In Hampton.’ We’re lookin’ at you, Foxhill.

Fox Hill is an area within the eastern part of Hampton, Virginia. It is mostly a residential community with a few small businesses scattered throughout. Fox Hill is bordered to the south by Phoebus, a neighborhood and former town that was incorporated within the city of Hampton; and Buckroe, a small beachfront community. Fox Hill Extends from Bloxom’s Corner down Beach Road to Grandview Island and includes areas down Beach Road and borders Colonial Acres at Silver Isles Blvd.

Magruder was a small unincorporated town in Virginia near Williamsburg in York County. Settled mostly by African-American freedmen after the American Civil War, it once had its own church, post office, cemetery, lodge, and homes. Magruder is considered extinct and one of the lost towns of Virginia.

Northampton is a neighborhood in Hampton, Virginia located in the mid-western section of the town. Northampton was also known in the 1970s as home of one of the oldest little league baseball league besides Foxhill. Northampton has a large number of houses, apartment complexes, schools and shopping centers. The schools include Forrest Elementary School, Tucker-capps Elementary School, Phoenix preK-8, Jefferson Davis Middle School, and Bethel High School. It is also home to the ‘Northampton Bruins’ a little league football and baseball team.

Phoebus was an incorporated town located in Elizabeth City County on the Virginia Peninsula in eastern Virginia. Upon incorporation in 1900, it was named in honor of local businessman Harrison Phoebus, who is credited with convincing the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway to extend its tracks to the town from Newport News.
