I grew up in New Mexico and I have also lived in other states. I think NM is great for retirees, the weather is nice and mild, there's a lot of art and hispanic culture, and the people are very neighborly and friendly. Now, if you are 40 or younger, I would recommend you move to another state unless you Really Really LOVE the outdoors, if you want to get off the grid, or if you need to lay low! There's not much to do here, the main cities are Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and Las Cruses. The only city I would recommend is Las Cruses to be honest. Crime is high per population, low diversity, and unfortunately poverty is as high as they say here. Schools try but they are low and they do not have enough funding to catch up to other states. Unless you have ties to family here, it is pretty isolating. Most people that I know who love it here are older people, NM natives, people who are nature enthusiasts or "crunchy/artsy" people. People are pretty tough here so even though we are dead last in everything, we still rep NM hard! And we have the best green chili and New Mexican food in the southern part of the state! Everything else aside, it's still a great state to visit and the Albuquerque hot air balloon festival is a wonderful experience!

Don't speed in small towns! Jalisco's Cafe has good authentic New Mex food & you have to eat a sopapilla with honey. They will ask you do you want red or green, or they will call it christmas in the northern part of the state, they are talking about red and green chili. Remember to ask for a sample of the chili before ordering, every batch varies per spiciness.
