I grew up in Bay Shore, and for the most part, my life was better for being there. My father had grown up in Bay Shore, too -- and his mother, my grandmother, still lived in the town. A lot of people from Bay Shore are permanent residents, that way. They never really leave. I attended public schools in Bay Shore every year. I was a member of the Bay Shore Yacht Club. I trick-or-treated in Bay Shore, learned to drive in Bay Shore, made all my friends in Bay Shore, had my first kiss in Bay Shore. It isn't anything spectacular, but it's home.

There's a huge income disparity between the wealthiest and the poorest families in town, and it's visible as you drive through certain areas. The ferry to Fire Island brings a lot of tourism in the summer. Every year, Bay Shore has an arts festival on Main Street -- which has become considerably more "hip" in recent years -- that is worth checking out.
