If you’d like to strike gold in the Sooner State, move to one of the richest cities in Oklahoma sooner rather than later. But which places have the most wealth?
A good place to start would be looking at the areas surrounding Oklahoma’s two biggest cities, Oklahoma City and Tulsa. All of the cities you’ll find on this list are within an hour’s drive of one of the cities, with Piedmont topping the list of richest OK City suburbs and Bixby topping the Tulsa list. So if you want to make the kind of dough you need to get courtside tickets to the Sooners or Thunder game, any of these cities has a good chance to provide.
What do folks need to earn to live in the richest spots in Oklahoma? Well, the average median household income for this list is just a hair over $75,000/year. If your career is in anything involved with oil production, then you may have a pretty easy time finding a well-paying gig that’ll grant access to one of these wealthy cities. Who knows, if you rise to the top spot in your company, you may make more than Oklahoma’s top oil magnate Harold Hamm..
So how did we decide which places in Oklahoma have the most monetary mojo? First we narrowed down the cities to only those with a population over 5,000. Then we looked at the Census data from the American Community Survey to see which of the 73 remaining cities had the best combination of low poverty and unemployment rates and high median household income. That left us with only the places someone like Gatsby would be proud to call home.
Grab a plate of chicken fried steak and black-eyed peas and wash it down with some Dom Perignon, because we’re heading to the wealthiest places Oklahoma has to offer.
That wraps up our science-driven attempt to discover the wealthiest spots in Oklahoma. Unsurprisingly, half the cities on this list are also on our list of best places to live in Oklahoma. Not to say that wealth alone makes a place great to live, but it does help a whole lot.
So which of these places takes the gold medal in prosperity? According to the data, Piedmont is the richest city in Oklahoma for 2023.
To see how the rest of the Sooner State’s cities of 5,000 or more landed in terms of wealth, have a look at the complete list below.

Methodology: How We Determined The Richest Places In Oklahoma For 2023
The first thing that comes to most people’s minds when they think about determining the richest places is to simply identify personal incomes. After all, rich people have really high salaries.
However, we don’t believe that one statistic wholly encompasses what it means to be one of the “richest places”. So we looked at this set of criteria from the newly released 2017-2021 American Community Survey:
- Poverty Level
- Median Household Income
- Unemployment Rate
Median household income is the most digestible way to understand how rich a place really is. The unemployment rate tries to capture the prospects for more people to become rich. If more people are employed, the richer the future looks.
After we collected the data for all 73 places with more than 5,000 people in Oklahoma, we ranked each place from 1 to 73 for each of the criteria, with 1 being the richest.
We then averaged all the rankings for a place into a “Rich Score” with the place having the lowest overall Rich Score, Piedmont, crowned the “Richest City In Oklahoma For 2023”. You can download the data here.
