HomeSnacks knows that you're all dying to know where the best places to retire in Louisiana are located. So, we created a list of the best places to retire in Louisiana for 2023. And considering this is our tenth time ranking the best places to retire in EVERY state in America, we know what we're talking about; and, folks, some of the best are located in this southern gem.
This is because Louisiana is crazy tax friendly: it has some of the lowest tax rates in the country. But that's not all. The Bayou State's best places to retire are super safe, super affordable, and the people that live in these places are super friendly. However, to set our list apart from all of those other websites trying to copy what we do, we thought it would be interesting to look at whether a place is located close to an international airport. You know, because you're eventually going to have to hang up the keys to the RV.
And if you're thinking about testing the Louisiana waters with a rental situation, go for it. Rent in Louisiana is currently below the national average and the state's top ten places to retire have some pretty good deals. The ying to this yang, however, is that the poverty rate for Louisiana's 65 and older is pretty high and the state's senior healthcare could use an upgrade in the form of more geriatricians and better nursing homes.
But, we're here to talk about the best places to retire in Louisiana. So, don't waste another second, scroll on down to see what gold star places made the list.

Methodology: How We Determined The Best Places To Retire In the Pelican State for 2023
To create our list of the best places in Louisiana to retire, we first used Census data to find all places in the Pelican State -- 473 cities and towns.
We then narrowed it down to places with at least 10,000 people that weren't townships. This left us with 29 places from across the state.
For these 29, we looked at the following criteria taken from the Census, the FBI's Crime Report, National Weather Service, and OpenFlights:
- Low cost of living as measured by rent
- Low crime
- Things to do (Museums, Colleges, and Libraries in town)
- Nice weather
- Distance to the closest international airport
- Other retirees (High median age)
We then ranked each of these places for each criteria from one to 29, with the lowest number being the best.
Finally, we took the average rank across these criteria. The place, in this case Thibodaux, with the lowest average rank was crowned the best of the best, a place for you to start your second careers. You can download the data here.
