The town is located in the northern part of Frederick County, approximately ten miles from the Pennsylvania border, along U.S. Highway 15. It is very close to Cunningham Falls State Park and Catoctin Mountain Park, which contains the presidential retreat of Camp David. Thurmont is also home to Catoctin Colorfest, an arts and crafts festival that draws in about 125,000 people each autumn.

Ocean City is widely known in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States and is a frequent destination for vacationers in that area. The population was 7,102 at the 2010 U.S. Census, although during summer weekends the city hosts between 320,000 and 345,000 vacationers, and up to 8 million visitors annually. During the summer, Ocean City becomes the second most populated municipality in Maryland, after Baltimore. It is part of the Salisbury metropolitan area.

Of the town, George Washington once wrote, “Tan-nee town is but a small place with only the Street through wch. the road passes, built on. The buildings are principally of wood.” Taneytown has a history museum that displays the history of the town for visitors and citizens to see. The Bullfrog Road Bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

Methodology: How we determined the whitest places in Maryland for 2026
To rank the whitest places in Maryland, we used Saturday Night Science to look at Census demographic data.
We had to look at the number of white people living in each city in Maryland on a per capita basis. In other words, the percentage of white people living in each city in Maryland.
We looked at table B03002: Hispanic OR LATINO ORIGIN BY RACE. Here are the category names as defined by the Census:
- Hispanic or Latino
- White alone*
- Black or African American alone*
- American Indian and Alaska Native alone*
- Asian alone*
- Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander alone*
- Some other race alone*
- Two or more races*
Our particular column of interest here was the number of people who identified as White alone.
We limited our analysis to places with a population greater than 5,000 people. That left us with 39 cities.
We then calculated the percentage of residents that are White. The percentages ranked from 89.4% to 0.6%.
Finally, we ranked each city based on the percentage of the White population, with a higher percentage being more White. Thurmont took the distinction of being the most White, while Bladensburg was the least White city.
We updated this article for 2026. This report represents our eleventh time ranking the whitest cities in Maryland.
